However, like any franchise worth its salt — which Assassin’s Creed no doubt is — there has to be some sense of closure at various milestones, which makes Assassin’s Creed 3 all the more important. Not only with this newest entry introduce a much-anticipated new setting (the American Revolution), and a new protagonist (Connor), but, as AC3’s Lead Designer explains, it will also “bring some finality to Desmond’s story.”
Speaking with OXM, Masters once again reiterated the fact that Desmond Miles, as a protagonist, might not be long for the world of Assassin’s Creed 3. When Alex Hutchinson spoke on concluding the Desmond portion of the story he was very wary about using the term death, whereas Masters avoids discussing it altogether.
Masters does, however, explain that the team at Ubisoft wanted players to experience “a big leap forward in the story,” which leads us to believe the story will progress beyond the cataclysmic event the series has been leading up to. In fact, Masters even teases that Assassin’s Creed 3 is going to lay a lot of the series’ cards on the table, and do away with the “meandering” that gamers have been admonishing since Brotherhood.
If Assassin’s Creed 3 wasn’t already one of gamers most anticipated games, the promise of more answers and less stalling is sure to bring more than a few back into the fold. Moreover, now that we know this will be Desmond’s last game it begs the question of where the series goes from here. While we can’t say that Assassin’s Creed 3 will deliver all the answers, it should presumably tease where the franchise is headed in the near future.
Do you agree that Assassin’s Creed has stalled as of late? Are you ready to say goodbye to Desmond?
Assassin’s Creed 3 releases October 30, 2012 for the PS3 and Xbox 360, November 18th for the Wii U, and November 20th for the PC.
