While we’ve learned a lot about Far Cry 3 protagonist Jason Brody and the mystifying island that will morph his personality traits over the course of the game, one area that Ubisoft has remained largely mum on is multiplayer – and specifically, who is developing it.

It now appears as though we have an answer. Far Cry 3 is being shown at this week’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, and according to a tweet from Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo, developer Ubisoft Massive – the studio behind World in Conflict and the first-person segments of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations – will be overseeing the multiplayer component of the game.

In some cases, a game’s developer roster might not be overly divulging of a specific design theme or gameplay focus. But when we asked Dan Purdy about which studios were involved with Far Cry 3, he treated the question like he wanted to protect some of the FPS’s unannounced plans:

Could Ubisoft Massive have been brought on for a truly unique reason? Vox Game’s Brian Crecente also tweeted from the event that Massive is building and “online universe” with elements from indie and social games for Far Cry 3.

It’s an interesting (albeit vague) description, and it could indicate that something with the stylings of World in Conflict’s large-scale RTS universe or Revelations’ abstract first-person asides is in mix. Be sure to check back with Game Rant as GDC rolls along to see if we hear more.

Far Cry 3 releases on September 4, 2012, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
