It’s hard to argue that after a month on store shelves, an extra day or two required to complete the update is going to change the opinion of many. However, in a post on the company’s official blog, the update team explained that earning back the respect of their fans means - unfortunately - taking as much time as needed:
The planned patch is intended to address a number of lingering issues across all platforms, ranging from corrupted save files, game crashes upon the loading said saved files, as well as connectivity and online issues. Ubisoft is no more specific on when the patch can be expected to go live, but if the claim that “refurbishments” to the game’s map is any indication, it’s far from a minor fix.
As stated last week, we’d expected to release the patch today (and we know that many are anticipating its release), but we are choosing to hold off until we can give you the improvements we’ve promised. We are committed to delivering major performance improvements, which requires that we refurbish the Paris map and that will take a few more days to hit the high level of quality our players deserve.
At this point, the studio’s willingness to delay a release date can be understood (and hopefully the company will be more willing to do just that in the future). Launching a broken game is unforgivable in the eyes of many consumers these days, but even with Assassin’s Creed Victory confirmed to be under construction, the developers haven’t buried their heads in the sand following Unity’s disappointing launch.
The promised free game for all Unity Season Pass holders may not have arrived just yet (the update also brings with it confirmation that “more news” on the offer will be given “soon”), but it’s the only option Ubisoft has in working to overcome the negative press heaped upon it for not one, but two somewhat panned AC titles. If more time is the answer, then the sooner Ubisoft starts adopting the habit, the better.
