Today, the publisher has reportedly fired Desilets from his position at the company, and the renown designer is vowing to fight back hard. “Vigorously,” in fact. The news first broke this morning when sources close to the matter began informing media outlets that Desilets – who at the time was overseeing development on two games, codenamed 1666 and Underdog – was departing Ubisoft for the second time in his career....

Unfortunately for Desilets, Ubisoft would once again become a major part of his career. THQ filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2012, and promptly began liquidating and selling-off assets. During the fire-sale that followed, Ubisoft bought out THQ Montreal, therefore bringing Desilets and 1666 back into the fold. The reunion was to be brief, though. Desilets left the company and 1666 was postponed indefinitely, amid rumors that an outright cancellation would allow the new IP to fall back into Desilets’ hands....

Yet, if you’re a PS3 player, Black Flag isn’t the only Assassin’s Creed game set for release on Sony’s current generation hardware, as the PS Vita exclusive, Assassin’s Creed: Liberation was previously announced for an HD remake with significant gameplay tweaks, along with new missions and personas. At the time of the report, the game was teased as “coming soon,” but Sony has now unveiled an official release date for Liberation’s console debut....

The story has changed, but the series’ lead writer doesn’t see that as cause for concern. Citing the recent critical success of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, he believes that the future of the franchise has never been brighter; even if traditional storytelling becomes less and less important. While we’ve seen a lot of imagery from the game’s American Revolution setting, not too many details have released in regards to Assassin’s Creed 3’s story, but the first trailer for the game makes it look very promising for all gamers, new and old to the franchise. According to a temporary posting on Xbox.com, Assassin’s Creed 3 is also expected to have a 4-player co-op mode that could appeal to a wider audience, not dissimilar to what Electronic Arts and BioWare have done by adding co-op multiplayer in Mass Effect 3....

However, while screenshots, gameplay details, and story spoilers have all slipped out from under Ubisoft’s cloud of secrecy (largely due to forum-postings with scans of an upcoming Game Informer feature), the game publisher has successfully withheld one especially exciting tease - the first official Assassin’s Creed 3 trailer. Despite all of the Assassin’s Creed 3 information that has leaked, aside from box art and an official release date, the trailer is only the third official AC3 reveal from Ubisoft itself....

That poses a few serious questions that Ubisoft will have trouble answering, since a satisfying conclusion that still allows the franchise to keep chugging along isn’t easy to imagine. According to Assassin’s Creed 3’s lead writer bringing closure is the top priority, but should future writers wish to expand on certain themes, there will be plenty to work with.
